Åh nej, Bruno!

I bought ÅH NEJ, BRUNO! more than a year ago while I was in Stockholm. It was the first week of March and super cold. I was strolling around town in the near 0°C temperature and ended up in a small bookshop (surprise, surprise!) in the Stockholm Central Station. This lovely, orange-colored board book stays on my bookshelf until today and I finally felt that it is time. It is time I try to read it with my limited comprehension of Swedish.

Big Magic

BIG MAGIC by Elizabeth Gilbert is a joy to read. Mail on Sunday says the book is “brimming with positive ways to think about creative living.” Huffington Post says “I have profoundly changed my approach to creating since I read this book.” Harper's Bazaar says “Gilbert demystifies the creative process, [...]” and I, Alice Teh, agree wholeheartedly with everything that has been said.

I say please read this book. Gilbert encourages us to face and accept our fears of creativity. She encourages us to [...]

My 31 Practices

I’m currently reading MY 31 PRACTICES by Alan Williams and Steve Payne (illustrated by John Montgomery), and have just finished the chapter Habit. At the start of the said chapter, the authors are talking about the Hook Model (Trigger/Action/Variable Reward/Investment) and the Habit Loop (Cue/Routine/Reward). Towards the end they provided an illustration of the approach.

I decided to “test drive” the concepts by adapting them in the context of my Swedish language learning with Duolingo.

Ben Crystal and Shakespeare on Toast

Tonight is the night for the event SHAKESPEARE ON TOAST AND THE ORIGINAL PRONUNCIATION organized by the British Council at The Arts House.

I’ve been looking forward to meeting Ben Crystal in person. I have some of his father's books (David Crystal is his father), and I've watched their really cool YouTube video a few years ago on the introduction to the Original Pronunciation production of Shakespeare and what they reveal about the history of the English language.

About My Books

I used to actively review books a few years ago but not anymore. Now I write notes instead. I did a book rearranging exercise last year in December, both in Kindle and my physical bookshelves. I still research and buy a lot of books but this has somehow reduce because of my library membership in 2015 when I relocated to Singapore for work. I've just renewed my membership last year. I’m totally enjoying my second year with the NLB.

BuySingLit Festival 2017

Happy me! I stocked up my personal library with some local Singaporean literature at the BuySingLit Festival 2017 at Gillman Barracks in Singapore. I've thoroughly enjoyed myself in the weekend of activities dedicated to Singaporean literature, browsing the books, listening to local authors, talking to publishers and receiving book recommendations from them. It was awesome!

The highlight of my visit was meeting the author, poet, graphic guru, and thinker, the one and only Dr. Gwee Li Sui.

Pablo Neruda #15 to #20

I'm sorry I didn't quite make it to the finishing line and managed only to post up to #14 before I ended up in Beijing, China on February 7 for a business trip. As we all know, almost everything is blocked in China and that means I couldn't finish what I started. I'm sorry... BUT, [...]
