“All he knew for sure was that he was beginning to fall for a woman named Adrienne, who was watching the Inn for a friend in a tiny coastal town in North Carolina.” — p. 117

WARNING: Do not read this in public. Please also have a box of tissues ready because Nights in Rodanthe is a tear-jerker. Nicholas Sparks always makes me cry.

Adrienne Willis is a 60-year-old divorced woman and a mother of three grown children. She retells her story—a flashback of love and redemption, loss and grief—out of concern for her widowed daughter, who is going through depression after the death of her husband. This story has lived in the deepest corner of her heart for 15 years: two middle-aged people met by chance in the small North Carolina coastal town of Rodanthe.

Adrienne’s ex-husband had left her for a younger woman, and to escape her despair, she lost herself in raising her children. She goes to Rodanthe to help her friend, Jean, to take care of her inn. There, Adrienne meets Paul Flanner. After Paul’s wife had left him and a patient died after his surgery, he sells his medical practice and tries to make amends for his past.

Although the story is predictable and a tad unbelievable—two people fall in love in just two days and experience life-changing moments—this book is highly readable. But then we are talking about love, right? Anything can happen when love strikes.
