“Thinking and doing got miles between them.” — p. 267

The Hollow by Nora Roberts (NR) is the second book of the Sign of Seven Trilogy.
In the first book, the story romantically links Caleb and Quinn together, and in this one, we see Fox and Layla together. Book 2 builds on the suspense from book 1, and the nightmare is about to begin.
Fox O’Dell practices small-town law and can read minds. Coincidentally, Layla shares the same ability. That explains why she can relate to and anticipate what her customers fancy at the boutique in New York (before arriving at Hawkins Hollow), but she didn’t think much of it then. Together, Fox and Layla can use their ability to connect and fight evil. It is not that easy, though. Fox doesn’t trust her, and Layla won’t accept her gift. Will they overcome the barrier they set for themselves? To win the battle, they know they have to.
Along the way, the group found Ann Hawkins’s journal, an important discovery that could unlock the mystery of what is happening to the town. Ann was Giles Dent’s lover, and they were the three men’s ancestors. Dent was the person responsible for locking evil in its place before it was accidentally released by the boys many years back when they cut their wrists. The closer they are to solving the problem, the more vicious the evil becomes. This time, it’s going after them all at once.
I am happy with the book but still not crazy about it. This is one of the weaker trilogies in NR’s work, but nonetheless, still enjoyable. As usual, humour, romance and thrill make a good read, which is definitely visible in this instalment. NR develops a strong plot that keeps me reading to see how the men and women in the story overcome their dilemmas and problems—and together—achieve their goal of battling evil. This instalment does not affect me emotionally like the previous ones, for example, the Key Trilogy or the Three Sisters Island Trilogy, but it is still satisfying.
I’m waiting for the final book in The Pagan Stone, coming in December 2008. This is a joint reading with Julia of Julia’s Book Corner. Hey Julia: Thank you so much for reading this with me! Hopefully Melody can join us too.
