Morrigan’s Cross by Nora Roberts (NR) is the first book in the Circle Trilogy and her first venture into paranormal romance. This is also the first time I’m reading NR, and I’m glad to say I have found a new favourite author!
The story is set in 12th-century Ireland. Sorcerer Hoyt Mac Cionaoith is said to be descended from Morrigan, fairie queen and goddess. Hoyt lost his twin brother Cian to Lilith, a centuries-old vampire queen who turned him into a fellow bloodsucker. Lilith is an impossible beauty. Hoyt can’t defeat her by himself.
Morrigan, the goddess of battle, visits him and charges him with leading a battle against Lilith and her demons. The battle will be on the feast of Samhain. To do this, he must leave his place and go to another. He must also gather five others to form the circle to fight alongside him: “the witch, the warrior, the scholar, the one of many forms, and the one you’ve lost.”
Hoyt time-travels (almost a thousand years later) to present-day New York and finds his vampire brother Cian and Glenna, a beautiful red-haired witch. Two more warriors, Moira (a scholar and sharp bow-and-arrow shooter) and Larkin (a shapeshifter), join them back at the Mac Cionaoith ancestral home. The home is apparently well cared for by the wealthy Cian, who also owns an enterprise of businesses.
Later in the story, “the one you’ve lost” makes her appearance. Hoyt and Glenna fall in love as preparations for the impending battle with Lilith’s army of vampires intensify. Morrigan’s Cross is an interesting and engaging read. I am definitely getting the other two books in the trilogy!
