Svenska för invandrare (sfi)

In my previous post I mentioned about submitting an application to join the Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) program. It’s a municipal-sponsored program offered free-of-charge to residents of Sweden. In my case, it’s covered under the Jönköpings kommun.

I attended the first class on Monday, 25 October. Here is how it works in a nutshell:

  1. Download form from the Kommun website and email to the person-in-charge.

  2. Wait for reply.

  3. Received email on status of application and successful applicants are assigned the school.

  4. Attend school. On the first day, it’s orientation and ‘setting up system’—Canvas is used as the learning platform.

  5. Check weekly timetable, assignment details, lessons, etc. on Canvas.

To me, the overall experience in the beginning was rather chaotic and there was some elements of uncertainty right up until the first day at school. However, that’s all ironed out and I even managed to secure an evening slot instead of the original daily morning classes. The school is accommodating and the teachers are pleasant.

We are provided with a textbook titled Språkvägen: att börja med på sfi 2B och 3C (also free-of-charge). We submit our assignments through Canvas. I thoroughly enjoy learning with my Swedish teacher, Lisa S. Although it’s very basic at this juncture, I find the classroom sessions help me tremendously with listening and pronunciation.

This introduction class will last for about five weeks. After that, we will be placed at an appropriate level to begin the heavy lifting. I look forward to that!
