Embracing the Amateur Spirit

Thank you, James Clear, for this week’s inspiration!

James Clear quoted the above from the television series Mozart in the Jungle and said that it’s a reminder of the beauty of being an amateur.

I loved it! In a world that often equates value with expertise, I find so much joy in this word. Being an amateur is about diving into my passions with heart-first enthusiasm. Whether it’s getting lost in the fantastical realms of Gaiman or Asimov, cherishing the vintage vibes of my turntable and typewriter, or writing blog posts about books, it’s all about the love of the journey. I immerse myself in these activities not necessarily for professional reasons but for the sheer love and enjoyment they bring.

I must also say this amateur spirit infuses my life in Sweden with much fun (and ahem! anxiety…) when I try to speak (amateurish) Swedish.

It’s not about mastery but the pure delight of doing what we love simply because we love it. It’s about allowing our passions to guide our actions and finding joy in the journey, regardless of the destination or level of skill achieved. Find (and do) what grips your soul!
